Problem Solving
The
goal of this new feature is to enable students to express their
own understanding of a story problem, and
to merge math and literacy in one process. These are multi-level
problem solving exercises that our panel of kids really enjoyed.
Problem
Solving exercises are located on the back of the weekly test pages.
Most students should be able to complete this during your class
period.
We
start with very simple stories and give students the chance to
observe what is happening in the story. They use those observations
to solve problems. Later in the curriculum we ask students to
create a problem or two, and make up a CheckAnswer. Finally, students
are able to finish a story in their own words, and write several
problems about their story ending.
This
demonstrates mastery AND integration into their lives – when
they can write their own problems about stories they have helped
to create, using math concepts they have learned.
